Day courses

Tillington bear making courses are comprehensive but informal and are designed to help those who have never made a bear before or who need a bit of help in the early stages.  The cats often help by lying on the work table!

All Yours (beginners)

The day starts from 10am and goes on until around 4pm. You have a choice of fabric (mohair) and Tilly works with you throughout the day to make sure you go home with a complete bear. A light lunch and refreshments are included. The course fee is £75, plus £30 for all the materials including the bear pattern, which you can take away and use again.

Share and Enjoy (beginners)

For up to three people, the day starts at 10am and goes on until around 4pm.  There is an option either to work on a partially made-up bear or to start a bear from scratch. Starting from scratch may mean that your bear is not completely finished when you leave because Tilly can’t guarantee to help three people finish their bears in a single day, but see below. The fee for each person for the group course is £50 plus £30 for materials.

If you bring a friend you get a 10% off the price of your own course fee.

Finishing Touch (flexible options)

For people who don’t manage to finish their bear on the group course, Tilly runs evening ‘finisher’ courses. These can also be used for extra tuition if help is needed on any particular aspect of bear-making (for example, noses, paw-pads) or as an introduction to adapting patterns and designing your own bear. The fee for an evening course (around 2 hours, with a break for tea/coffee) is £30.

Sewing machine

You will need to bring a sewing machine.  If you don’t have one, Tilly can let you use one for the day at a charge of £10 (to cover the hire cost) but you need to let her know in plenty of time so that she can ensure that there is a machine available for you.

Supplied on a Tillington Course:

bullet good quality mohair, to make one bear;
bullet good quality filler;
bullet plastic pellets;
bullet ultrasuede;
bullet 5 joints (discs, washers and pins);
bullet a pair of glass or onyx eyes;
bullet threads and twine for one bear, including Perle nose thread.
